Study in Pink and White and Brown

During the summer of 1986 Jaco was spending his final visit

at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.  On July 21st, apparently

as part of his therapy, he painted this painting.  It appears to be

the room in which he was working, as it depicts a man sitting

at a table with paints and a canvas in front of him.  The painting

measures 30 inches by 15 inches.

The back of the painting has much information.  Jaco

has entitled it Study in Pink and White and Brown.  He

dates it July 21, 1986 and dedicates it "To my good

freind (?) Fred Erskine.  Love always".  Dr. Erskine was

a prominent New York psychiatrist and father of Weather

Report drummer Peter Erskine.  Dr. Erskine was involved

in treating Jaco, and the painting hung in his Manhattan

office until his retirement.  Jaco signs his name in three

different ways, apparently practicing how he wanted

to sign the painting.

One of the signatures on the back is how he often signed his name, with an appostrophe and a two digit year.

Two more signatures. The second is "Jaco" in Japanese.  It is 3 sounds; ji-yah-ko, with ji and yah merged as one syllable.
