Just a quick story:
I can't tell you the exact date, it is lost in the mists of my memory but it
would have to be the 1975 timeframe. I had the good fortune to know Pay Metheny
during his time at Berklee where I was a student. I was good friends with people
that knew him while he was in Coral Gables. I ended up playing bass for the
advanced level guitar ensemble Pat taught while he was at Berklee.
I remember walking through the lobby of the dorm building on Mass Ave to class
one day and having Pat tell about this remarkable bassist he knew....Jaco. A
direct quote, "he is the Charlie Parker of his instrument and, more, he
will be one the most influential musicians for a long time to come." This
was before either had "made the scene" or released recordings.
A few months later, Pat was tuning up his new trio to for his upcoming album
"Bright Size Life", a trio consisting of himself, Bobby Moses, and
Jaco at a small club in Boston called Pooh's Pub. What I saw was one of the most
remarkable band's.
To this day some 30 years later, I hold these sounds, this music, close. It is
still a source of influence and inspiration.
All the best,
David Sahadi
