New York City.
1980's
I was playing bass in a band during the
mid-80s. I would often pass by the old Lone Star Cafe after rehearsals and
gigs and see Jaco playing through the window. On many occasions he would see the
gig bag on my back and give me a nod. One winter evening, I was passing by,
covered in snow, and looked in the window. Jaco was playing with Hiram
Bullock and company. I wiped the window to get a better look and caught Jaco's
eye.
He motioned to me to come in and got the bouncer to let me in. I got in, warmed
up, and stayed for a while while Jaco played through his set. I gave him a wave
as thanks as I left and he gave me another nod as he started another song.
I was fortunate enough to play the Lone Star before it closed down. My
most cherished memory is standing in the same spot as Jaco stood and
playing "America" during the sound check, solely for myself.
